New romance

Mom was radiant and happy in her second marriage (1982). Charles was a better match for her, emotionally, than my father had been, and they were having adventures together.

Little Heather

Little me (Heather) sitting between my parents. I’ve always loved this candid picture for the feeling of being enveloped and taken care of by these marvellous big people, a primal feeling about parents and especially mothers that we all have, if we’re lucky. The world without your mother in it is an unknown place.

Actually, at the time of the photo, I’d just climbed up, which is why they’re laughing. I think that I remember thinking that this is what big people do, sit side-by-side on couches, so I’m going to do that too.

Visiting my paternal grandparents.

Queen of the Forest

For Malcolm’s 5th birthday, we created an Adventure Quest through the woods. The kids visited various exotic characters who gave them gifts (walking sticks, bags for treasures) or an assignment (find a Perfect Pinecone to give the next character). Mom played the Queen of the Forest. She held court and served tiny cups of tea from a tiny teapot.

Visits home to the farm on PEI

Some of these photos were taken later, but show the farm where June grew up, and her family.
